LEDs are made of semiconductors. A critical issue with all semiconductor devices is junction temperature, which must not exceed its maximum rated value.
Most of the electricity in an LED becomes heat rather than light, about 70% heat and 30% light. If this heat is not removed, the junction temperature may reach and exceed critical levels causing decreased light output and physical defects. Thus, unlike other light sources, thermal management of high power LEDs is a must. This is why a 320W LED highbay heat sink weighs more than a 320W magnetic higbay.
